How to Choose the Right Strength Equipment

Understand the different types of strength equipment and the best options for your goals.
Walk into any gym and you will see three main types of strength equipment: free weights, pin-loaded (selectorised) machines and plate-loaded machines. Each has a place — the right mix depends on your goals, your space and who will be using it.
Free weights Dumbbells, barbells, kettlebells and plates are the most versatile tools you can own. They train stability and coordination as well as strength, and take up relatively little space. They do require good technique, and heavier barbell work is safest with a rack and safety bars.
Pin-loaded (selectorised) machines These machines use a weight stack and a pin to choose the load. They guide the movement path, making them beginner-friendly and quick to adjust between users — ideal for hotels, residential gyms and busy commercial floors. Each machine usually targets a specific muscle group, such as a chest press, lat pulldown or leg extension.
Plate-loaded machines Plate-loaded machines combine the guided path of a machine with the feel of free weights. They handle heavy loads well and are popular with strength-focused members. You will need weight plates and storage nearby.
Racks, benches and functional trainers A power rack or half rack is the centre of most strength areas, supporting squats, presses and pull-ups safely. An adjustable bench multiplies the number of exercises you can do. Functional trainers and cable machines add hundreds of exercise options in one footprint.
What to check before you buy Look at frame construction and steel thickness, the quality of welds, upholstery and grips, the smoothness of pulleys and cables, adjustability for different body sizes, the footprint and height, and the warranty and after-sales support.
